COMPLETELY HOLLYWOOD (abridged)

By the REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY

The Lyceum Theatre Sheffield6/4/06

The other RSC bound onto stage last night to lampoon Hollywood (and to some extent the good Ol’ US of A) in ‘Completely Hollywood’ (abridged). Telling the simple tale of a writer a director and an actor all looking to create the perfect Hollywood blockbuster, the three actors take us on a cinematic journey that pokes fun at all of our most instantly recognisable movie moments and stereotypes. The writer is a nerd, the director thinks he’s a puppet master and the actor thinks he’s a movie star. From poking fun at silent movies through to the modern day business of film there is a dazzling array of sight gags, spoofs and one liners to keep any audience very happy indeed.

All the actors immediately develop a rapport with the audience that carries them throughout the evening, but the actor that really shines throughout all this is David Menkin as the would be star of the show – how appropriate then as that is precisely what he turns out to be. For those into serious theatre, however, be warned - this does have the feel of what might happen if we threw a bunch of drama students into a theatre and asked them to put on a play. It is deliberately rough around the edges and doesn’t even really have the kind of plot that Hollywood is here being criticised for. It does, however, have the immediacy of improv and the excitement that on this night, perhaps anything might happen. Fun, fresh and guaranteed not to challenge you intellectually, just like the best of Hollywood blockbusters – which, after all, is the point.
